Situated in the small rural hamlet of Staple Cross, Devon with Hockworthy being the nearest village 1/2 mile away, the Staplecross Inn is a beautiful 17th Century Ale House. Standing just up the road you can see the Exmoor Hills, The Quantock Hills, and Dartmoor.
The pub is believed to have started life as a small tavern with on-site stabling for horses. This was all in one very small room, with the second part of the bar believed to have been opened up for when a separate room was required for inns wanting to serve spirits.
The old Smithy used by the blacksmith was incorporated into the pub at a later date and this is what we now use as our Dining Room.
Our bar area is heated wholly by two Woodburners either end of the bar making the pub cosy and warm in the Winter.
A small extension was built to the back of the pub in 2005 housing a new indoor toilet block and beer cellar. This also provided some extra bar space.
The pub has been in various ownership over a large amount of years, dating back to the old Hancocks Brewery in Wiviliscobme. This brewery ceased trading in the early 1960’s and the old brewery building was partially used by the Exmoor Brewery until moving to a more modern site in recent years.
Having been in pubs most of our lives, we purchased the Staplecross Inn at the end of 2007. Our main aim has been to build a steady food trade to compliment our drinking trade. The pub still remains very much a locals pub and we know most people that come through the door.
We have a large Car Park and outside tables for when the sun does shine. We also welcome Children and Dogs providing they are well behaved. Dogs are only allowed in the bar area and not the dining room.
We offer Real Ales and local Ciders. Our Ciders come from Thatchers in Somerset plus guest Ciders from local brewers and our Real Ales come from a variety of breweries both local and further afield.
